This is a mechanism in which a spring latch attaches into a stationary item on the door frame and or wall to help keep the door closed. This is a simple lock that allows you to shut the door without turning the knob. The locks can have "dummy" lock which means it doesn't lock or it can come with a key which allows you to lock it.
